A 12-year-old girl was walking on a footpath when a cement slab fell on her. She reached CritiCare Asia Hospitals with serious injuries to her pelvis, lower spine, rectum, and right thigh. Our team repaired the internal injuries and created a temporary colostomy so her bowel could heal. We also fixed the fractured tailbone and sacrum and drained a blood collection in her thigh.
Her recovery took many months and several hospital stays. She needed skin grafting for a buttock wound, and the colostomy was later closed. A stubborn wound near the tailbone needed repeated cleaning procedures and led to a serious bloodstream infection. Guided by culture results and infectious disease specialists, she received a 35-day course of intravenous antibiotics. Her infection markers fell steadily, and she went home on oral medication. Her family was guided on nutrition, hydration and follow-up care.
