TRAINING DURING RESIDENCY
During the course of my 3 year Orthopaedic Residency in Sancheti hospital, pune from 2010 – 2013, I was posted in the spinal unit for one year (under Dr. ketan khurjekar and shailesh hadgaonkar) . The spinal unit was one of the largest referral centre from all over maharastra. I had good exposure in all fields of Orthopaedic surgery, but being in the spine unit I had an added advantage of dealing with the all the spine cases which were referred to our centre . Therefore, I had graded exposure to all the spinal problems presenting to us.
A very large section of our patients presented with problems pertaining to spinal neurology as well as structural disorganization of the spine, requiring both, decompression and reconstruction.
Problems dealt with included:
1. Tuberculosis and other infections- especially in difficult regions, CVJ, multi-level disease and
disease with kyphosis.
2. Degenerative: Cervical myelo/radiculopathy, degenerative low back problems.
4. Spinal trauma
5. CV pathologies.
This spectrum of pathology provided a good initial exposure to varied spectrum of the spinal pathologies and the use of various types and generations of spinal instrumentation systems.
